A true exotic among Rolex watches, the Tru-Beat debuted in 1954 with the Calibre 1040, which ticked five times per second at 18,000 vibrations per hour. For this reason, a complex escapement was developed that reduced the five beats to just one beat. Rolex marketed the watch specifically for doctors and nurses, who could use it to more easily measure the pulse of patients.
